About

Somerset Maugham's novel "Theatre" was published in 1937. In it the author describes a world that is largely his own: besides being a short-story writer and novelist, Maugham was also a successful playwright, especially in his early years. He knows from within not only the outward glamour of the theatre and the actor's craft, but also the unflattering side of what happens backstage and in the dressing rooms: rivalry, intrigue, vanity and self-love. The title is unambiguous: the main theme here is the theatre, but in a broader sense — both as a stage art and as a social mask. And Julia Lambert, the uncrowned queen of the London stage, is the very embodiment of Shakespeare's "All the world's a stage...". She is always playing a role, on stage or off, but perhaps she has never fully realised it. Until the moment her son Roger asks her whether a "real" Julia exists at all. Somerset Maugham's novels are undoubtedly among the literary masterpieces of the twentieth century. His brilliant style, marked by unexpected plot twists, wit, insight and irony, makes his works truly addictive. This applies in full force to "Theatre". Stage version and direction: Boyka Velkova. Set design: Chavdar Gyuzeliev. Costumes: Tsetska Ivaylova. Music: Theodosii Spasov. Choreography: Tatyana Sokolova. Featuring: Boyka Velkova, Iriney Konstantinov, Daniel Varbanov, Vyara Tabakova, Martin Dimitrov, Kire Gjorevski, Aleksandra Svilenova, Vladislava Nikolova, Nadya Keranova, Aneta Ivanova, Stefan Kashev and Slavina Markova. With the special participation of Vladimir Penev (voice). Premiere: 18 and 19 October 2025.
