With the special participation of Vladimir Penev (voice). Maugham's novel "Theatre" was published in 1937. In it the author describes a world that is largely his own: besides being a storyteller and novelist, Maugham was also a successful playwright, especially in his early years as a writer. He knew at close hand not only the outward glamour of the theatre and the actor's craft, but also the unflattering side of what happens behind the curtain and in the dressing rooms: rivalry, intrigue, self-love and vanity. The title is quite unambiguous — the main theme here is, of course, the theatre, but theatre in a broader sense: both as a stage art and as a social mask. And Julia Lambert, the uncrowned queen of the London stage, is the very embodiment of Shakespeare's "All the world's a stage...". She always plays a part, whether on stage or off it, but perhaps she has never fully realised it — until the moment her son Roger asks her whether a "real" Julia exists at all. Maugham's novels are undoubtedly among the literary masterpieces of the 20th century. His brilliant style — marked by unexpected plot twists, wit, insight and irony — makes his works truly captivating. This applies in full force to "Theatre" as well.
